Duty-Free Shopping in Gibraltar: What to Buy & Where (2026)

Gibraltar has no VAT and no general sales tax. That makes it one of the last genuine duty-free shopping destinations in Europe. Whether you are crossing the border from Spain for the day or staying at Victory Suites for the week, Main Street and the surrounding lanes are where your wallet gets a holiday too. Here is exactly what to buy, where to buy it, and how much you will actually save.

Why Gibraltar Is a Shopping Destination

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory with its own tax regime. The key facts:

  • No VAT — the UK charges 20%, Spain 21%, Gibraltar charges neither
  • Gibraltar pound pegged 1:1 to GBP — British notes and coins accepted everywhere
  • Euros also accepted by most shops (though change is given in GBP)
  • English-speaking — no language barrier in any shop

The result: savings of 20–30% compared to UK high street prices on perfume, spirits, and jewellery, and sometimes more compared to Spanish prices. On big-ticket items, those savings add up quickly.

For a broader overview of the territory, see our ultimate Gibraltar travel guide.

Main Street: Gibraltar’s Shopping High Street

Main Street runs the full length of the town, from Casemates Square in the north to Referendum Gates in the south. It is roughly 600 metres of pedestrianised shopping, and it is the heart of Gibraltar’s retail scene.

What You’ll Find on Main Street

  • Fashion: Marks & Spencer (215 Main Street, full clothing and food hall), Next, Monsoon, Mango, Matalan, Peacocks, Boux Avenue, Dorothy Perkins
  • Perfume & cosmetics: SM Seruya (5 stores), Star of India, Hotu Perfumery
  • Spirits & tobacco: Lewis Stagnetto, Bubbles, and numerous specialist shops
  • Electronics: Newton Store (Gibraltar’s only Apple Authorised Reseller, operating since 1991)
  • Jewellery: Pandora, Swarovski, Antonio Diamond Boutique, plus family-run heritage jewellers
  • Health: Holland & Barrett (2 stores), pharmacies with competitive skincare and supplement pricing
  • Souvenirs: Gibraltar Arts and Crafts for handmade local goods

Opening Hours

Most Main Street shops follow British hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM Monday to Friday. Saturday closing is earlier — most shops shut at 1:30 PM. Sunday opening is limited and generally only happens when a cruise ship is in port.

Tip: Arrive early on weekday mornings for a relaxed browse. Cruise ship days (often Tuesday and Thursday) bring crowds.

What to Buy: Category by Category

Perfume & Cosmetics — Save ~20%

This is Gibraltar’s biggest draw for shoppers. Without VAT, perfume prices are consistently lower than the UK and Spain. Expect roughly 20% below UK RRP on major brands like Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford, Bulgari, Estée Lauder, Hermès, La Mer, Lancôme, and MAC.

As a verified example, Bleu de Chanel aftershave 50ml sells for approximately £40 in Gibraltar versus £57 at Boots in the UK.

Best perfume shops:

  • SM Seruya — Gibraltar’s leading perfumery since the 1850s, with 5 stores on Main Street plus an airport shop. Carries all major international brands.
  • Star of India — 100/108 Main Street. Known for offering additional discounts beyond marked prices. Also stocks Ray-Ban and Oakley sunglasses.
  • Hotu Perfumery — Unique fragrance selection, affiliated with Star of India.

Pro tip: Bring the UK price on your phone. Gibraltar shops are used to price comparisons and will sometimes match or beat a competitor if you ask politely. Always compare before buying — savings are real but not guaranteed on every single product.

Spirits & Alcohol — Save 20–30%

No duty on spirits means Gibraltar is one of the cheapest places in Europe for quality alcohol. Expect spirits to cost roughly a third less than UK prices.

Best spirit shops:

  • Lewis Stagnetto — Premium tobacconist and wine merchant with an extensive spirits selection. Stores on Main Street and at Ocean Village. Family business with deep expertise.
  • Bubbles — Duty-free shop with a good range of spirits and local treats.
  • Various shops along Main Street — prices are competitive between them, so it is worth comparing.

Look for: Local gin from Spirits of the Rock — a unique Gibraltarian souvenir you will not find elsewhere.

Tobacco — Significant Savings

Gibraltar has some of the cheapest cigarettes in Western Europe. A pack of 20 Marlboro costs approximately £4.09 compared to £14+ in the UK or €5.50+ in Spain.

Note: This is the main reason you see queues at the land border — Spanish residents cross daily for tobacco. As a tourist, stick to your personal allowance and you will have no issues. Gibraltar has official minimum retail prices set by law.

Electronics — Save 10–15%

The savings on electronics are more modest than perfume or spirits, but still meaningful on expensive items.

Where to buy:

  • Newton Store — Main Street, Gibraltar’s only Apple Authorised Reseller. Full range of MacBooks, iMacs, iPads, and iPhones. Operating since 1991.

Tip: Check that the product comes with an international warranty. Some items sold in Gibraltar carry only a local warranty. Always compare with UK online prices before committing.

Jewellery & Watches — Save 20–25%

Several jewellers on Main Street offer gold, silver, and watches without VAT. The savings on high-end watches can run to hundreds of pounds.

Notable jewellers:

  • Pandora and Swarovski — international brands at VAT-free prices
  • Antonio Diamond Boutique — premium diamonds and gemstones
  • Family-run heritage jewellers — several along Main Street with decades of expertise in gold and silver

Skincare & Pharmacy Products

Gibraltar’s pharmacies stock international skincare brands at lower prices than both the UK and Spain.

Worth buying:

  • La Roche-Posay, Vichy, Bioderma — typically 20–30% below UK pharmacy prices
  • Supplements and vitamins — generally cheaper than UK

Beyond Main Street: Other Shopping Areas

Casemates Square

At the northern end of Main Street, Grand Casemates Square is a large open plaza surrounded by bars, restaurants, and shops set within historic 1817 British-built bombproof barracks. A good place to start your shopping trip before heading south along Main Street.

Casemates is also the heart of Gibraltar’s nightlife scene — grab a drink after shopping.

Ocean Village

The Ocean Village marina complex is more leisure-focused. You will find Lewis Stagnetto (wines, spirits, tobacco), Risso’s Daily (fresh bread, pastries, groceries), several boutiques, and over 20 waterfront restaurants and bars. Pleasant for an evening stroll after a day of shopping.

ICC Shopping Mall

The International Commercial Centre at 2A Main Street is a 17-floor modern building beside Casemates Square. Inside you will find the Emporium department store, Eroski ICC mini supermarket (which carries Waitrose products), a tobacco shop, and food outlets. Air-conditioned — a welcome break in summer.

Customs Allowances: Know Before You Buy

Flying to the UK

Gibraltar is treated as outside the EU for customs purposes. Your duty-free allowance arriving in Great Britain is:

Alcohol:

  • 4 litres of spirits (over 22% ABV), OR 9 litres of drinks under 22% ABV (fortified/sparkling wine, cider)
  • PLUS 18 litres of still wine
  • PLUS 42 litres of beer

Tobacco (one of the following):

  • 200 cigarettes, OR 100 cigarillos, OR 50 cigars, OR 250g tobacco, OR 200 sticks of heated tobacco

Other goods: Up to £390 in value.

Important: If you exceed your allowance, you pay duty on the full value of that category, not just the excess. Pack spirits and perfume in your hold luggage (liquids over 100ml cannot go in hand luggage).

Crossing to Spain by Land

Spain applies specific EU limits for goods from Gibraltar:

Alcohol:

  • 1 litre of spirits over 22%, OR 2 litres of drinks under 22%
  • PLUS 4 litres of still wine
  • PLUS 16 litres of beer

Tobacco:

  • 200 cigarettes, OR 100 cigarillos, OR 50 cigars, OR 250g tobacco
  • Border zone residents (within 15km of Gibraltar, including La Línea): reduced to just 80 cigarettes

Other goods: €300 per person by land.

Spanish customs at the land border are known to be thorough, particularly for tobacco. Stick to the allowances and you will be fine.

Shopping Tips for Maximum Savings

  1. Know your UK prices — bring your phone and check current UK RRP. The savings are real, but you want to know exactly how much you are saving on each item.

  2. Shop early in the week — weekends and cruise ship days bring crowds. Monday and Wednesday mornings are quietest.

  3. Remember Saturday hours — most shops close at 1:30 PM on Saturdays. Plan accordingly.

  4. Compare between shops — Main Street has multiple perfume and spirit shops within 200 metres of each other. Prices vary by a few pounds.

  5. Check your allowances first — know your customs limits before you buy. There is no point saving £50 on spirits if you cannot take them home.

  6. Ask about multi-buy discounts — spirit shops in particular often offer deals on buying 2+ bottles.

  7. Don’t forget the weight — if you are flying back, remember that bottles are heavy. Factor in your baggage allowance.

For photography enthusiasts, Main Street and the surrounding areas offer excellent street photography opportunities.

Is It Worth Crossing the Border Just to Shop?

Yes — if you are already in the Costa del Sol area. Many visitors drive from Marbella (75 minutes), Estepona (45 minutes), or even Seville (2.5 hours) specifically for duty-free shopping. A family can easily save £200–300 in a single trip on perfume, spirits, and tobacco combined.

Combine shopping with a visit to the Rock, lunch on Main Street, and a walk around the marina, and you have a full day out that pays for itself.
